Growth Hub business engagement event held for SMEs

A feast of information and advice was given at a business lunch held by the D2N2 Growth Hub (January 28).

The lunch was held at the Indian Community Centre Association (ICCA), the Atrium centre, in Carrington, Nottingham and featured speakers from Nottingham City Council Environmental Health Department, Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service and the D2N2 Growth Hub.

As a part of its mission to help growing businesses, the D2N2 Growth Hub offers a Better Business Regulation (BBR) service, designed to help small businesses get to grips with such topics as fire safety, food, hygiene and health and safety. These were discussed at last Thursday’s event.

The D2N2 Growth Hub is a part of the D2N2 Local Enterprise Partnership; a private sector led partnership promoting economic growth and jobs creation across Derby, Derbyshire, Nottingham and Nottinghamshire. Growth Hub team members gave a a small presentation at the event on how they support businesses looking to expand and explained how to access its many different services.

Businesses were also able to ask questions of regulators. One issue which arose was the ‘star rating’ system for hygiene and advice was given on how businesses can access help to possibly improve this.

Paul Cooper, D2N2 BBR Co-ordinator, said:

“This is the second engagement opportunity we have initiated in the city and we would like to continue to hold similar events to get a chance to educate businesses on what help is available to them.

“The lunch idea is a way of getting business to engage with regulators in a friendly atmosphere to get first hand advice from the people who would inspect them; in particular those businesses which have barriers of language and cultural differences to overcome. We hope this networking idea will get the message across for diverse businesses to come and engage with the regulators on any regulatory issues they may have.

He added:

“The BBR is trying to reach out to small businesses and inform them what help is available in getting their regulations compliant in a cost effective way, the benefits that compliance can bring to a business and that the regulators are there to support business and ensure public safety and make a level playing field for business.”
