Chief Executive David Ralph welcomes growth boost to Nottingham Enterprise Zone

Alliance Boots today announced a collaboration with BioCity, the UK’s leading bioscience incubation company, to establish a new business incubator focused on health and wellness called MediCity.

MediCity, a new subsidiary of BioCity, will provide innovative start-up and growing businesses in the health and wellness sector with fully serviced office and laboratory space, based within the Nottingham Enterprise Zone on the Alliance Boots site in Beeston.  It represents a promising step in the site’s development and will encourage new businesses into the Nottingham area.

Businesses housed at MediCity will benefit from BioCity’s experience of successfully growing businesses in specialised incubator environments and Alliance Boots expertise in the global healthcare sector, including access to innovation and product development knowledge, as well as supply chain expertise.

In December, the D2N2 Board made the Nottinghamshire Enterprise Zone its first priority for investment from the Growing Places Fund.

D2N2 LEP Chief Executive David Ralph said: “This news is a huge boost to the Enterprise Zone and another forward step for the area.

“This is a specialist area of business and will further enhance Innovation in the D2N2 region, something that is key to driving jobs and economic growth.

“This move highlights the benefits available from the Enterprise Zone and it will provide a great location for MediCity.

“It also shows the work and progress being made to the site and we look forward to seeing MediCity and more businesses locate to the Enterprise Zones in the future.”

Alex Gourlay, Chief Executive, Health & Beauty Division, Alliance Boots, said: “We warmly welcome MediCity onto our site.  Alliance Boots and BioCity’s complementary expertise will attract businesses to MediCity and further enhance our existing world-class innovation hub in Nottingham.  Today’s news illustrates our progress in developing the site, as well as our continued commitment to Nottingham and the wider UK economy.”

Commenting on the announcement Dr Glenn Crocker, CEO, BioCity says: “MediCity is a timely addition to the thriving healthcare and medical technology sector in the UK. I am particularly excited by the benefits Alliance Boots market insights can bring to early stage companies, with the potential to accelerate development and provide a possible route to market. We are interested in speaking to all businesses involved in health, beauty and wellness, whether they are established or still developing a concept.”
