DERBY train-maker Bombardier has secured an £88 million order to provide more rolling stock for London.
Transport for London has placed an order for 57 carriages with the Litchurch Lane firm for the London Overground route.
The order will allow TfL to operate longer trains on the route, increasing passenger capacity by 25%.
Mayor of London, Boris Johnson said: “London Overground has been a truly dazzling success and more and more Londoners are now using the vastly improved service.
“Not only will these new carriages help us meet passenger demand, but they will also support jobs and growth at their birthplace in Derby.”
The Derby Telegraph first revealed that TfL was considering extending its existing trains from four to five carriages in January.
The order is a welcome boost to Bombardier, which two years ago missed out on the £1.4 billion Thameslink contract.
