Intelligent Energy is named most successful company by UK Science Park Association

Intelligent Energy – the clean energy technology company founded on Loughborough University research – has won the Most Successful Company Award at The United Kingdom Science Park Association 30th Anniversary Summit.

Intelligent Energy received the award from science writer and presenter Michael Mosley, at the UKSPA Gala Dinner on Thursday 10 July.

The UKSPA Award follows on from Intelligent Energy’s London stock exchange debut last week. An IP rich company with over 25 years in R&D, and over 350 patents granted, development of proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells began at Loughborough University in the late 1980s, and at spin-out, Advanced Power Sources (APS) Ltd, which became the UK’s first company to specifically address the development and commercialisation of PEM fuel cells.

Today Intelligent Energy partners with blue-chip companies and OEMs, to accelerate the global deployment of clean technology for the automotive, consumer electronics and distributed power and generation markets. In February 2012, Intelligent Energy established the joint venture SMILE FC with Suzuki to develop and manufacture air-cooled fuel cell systems for a range of industry sectors.

In 2013, Intelligent Energy established Essential Energy in Bangalore to addresses the gap between supply and demand of energy in India and to provide a route to market for their fuel cell technology. In March 2014, it signed a landmark multi-million dollar deal to provide cost-efficient power for telecom towers across India.

UKSPA’s 30th Anniversary Awards celebrate the Science Park and Innovation Movement which over the last three decades has delivered significant economic growth to the national and local knowledge economies. The shortlist demonstrates the success of high-growth technology and knowledge based firms, their partnerships, initiatives as well as the innovation locations that support and nurture this success.

Professor Steve Rothberg, Loughborough University Pro Vice Chancellor for Enterprise, said: “Intelligent Energy is an outstanding example of a successful science park organisation. In 2001, they were the ‘one-to-watch’ in the University’s new Innovation Centre. Today, with a workforce of 350, they are thriving within our Science and Enterprise Parks’ energy cluster.”
