National low-carbon conference to showcase how ‘green collar’ job creation is driving growth to be held in D2N2 area

A national ‘low carbon’ business conference will be staged in Nottingham this November with D2N2 – the Local Enterprise Partnership for Derby, Derbyshire, Nottingham and Nottinghamshire – supporting the event.

Leading experts are meeting for the first time to showcase ways in which “green collar” job creation is starting to drive local economic development in the UK.

The Growing a Local Low Carbon Employment & Business Sector conference will bring together cities and regions from across the UK to share experiences as to how the low-carbon sector is being harnessed to create jobs and businesses.

It takes place at Nottingham Conference Centre, in Burton Street, on Wednesday November 6, 2013, from 9am to 5pm.

The low carbon sector is now of key importance to the national economy. In 2011, it accounted for a third of the total economic growth in the UK and overall it accounts for nearly 10% of economic activity.

With almost 940,000 people now employed in the low-carbon sector, the industry is of greater national significance, in terms of employment than the automotive or communications sectors.

Topics to be examined at the conference include:

  • Growing local Cleantech clusters
  • The role of LEPs in developing a low carbon economy
  • Creating and funding a low carbon investment strategy
  • Business and incubation support for “enviro-entrepreneurs”
  • The emerging low carbon Vehicle technology sector
  • Inward investment Business Case studies – critical success factors
  • Usage of local ownership of energy supply to create employment
  • Low carbon training and skills development

D2N2 Local Enterprise Partnership Chief Executive David Ralph said: “The shift towards renewable energy sources and energy saving is creating new business markets with opportunities in renewable energy generation.

“We are delighted to be supporting this national event and for it to be taking place in the D2N2 patch. Low carbon is crucial to business and I would encourage representatives from all our fellow Local Enterprise Partnerships to attend this flagship event.

“Here at D2N2, we are developing a prospectus which will identify specific activities and opportunities to support investment and business growth, focusing on innovation, renewable heat, district energy, retrofit energy efficiency, low-carbon transport and eco ‘tourism’, both business and leisure.”

Event Organiser Neil Horsley, of CleanTech Business Ltd, said: “As far as we are aware this is the first occasion when experts, at the forefront of low carbon economic development, have met to outline practical steps by which ‘green collar’ jobs can be created at a local level.

“We have already had a lot of interest from LEP’s and Local Authorities who are keen to position themselves as a home for future low-carbon sector jobs and businesses.”
