New Division Supports Business Leaders’ Training Needs

Derby College is launching a new division to support business growth through a suite of executive and management training programmes.

Roundhouse Thinking will be officially launched at two events for employers next week.

The first will be held at the Derby College Roundhouse campus in Pride Park on Tuesday April 29 at 7.30am, followed by an event at the new Ilkeston campus in Pimlico at 5.30pm.

Roundhouse Thinking is a suite of one day and short training courses under three themes:

  • Innovation – includes leadership skills, strategy, creative thinking and new ways of working, such as use of social media
  • Optimisation– looks at maximising processes and performance within a business as well as leading sales teams and communication skills
  • Compliance – tackles statutory training requirements from first aid at work to health and safety.

Derby College Director of Business Development April Hayhurst explained: “Our research shows that, whilst many businesses and organisations have continued to invest in work-based training such as apprenticeships and vocational NVQs, management training has been cut back due to economic pressures on the bottom line over recent years.

“As the economy picks up and business confidence improves, employers tell us that the key element to their future success is to upskill their management teams so that they can better strategically plan and executive their growth plans.

“We have therefore developed a bespoke package of courses that will be delivered by specialists in different industrial areas and at a time and place convenient for businesses.

“Roundhouse Thinking has been designed to help businesses perform at the highest level – inspiring leaders, transforming cultures and driving growth.

“It is a suite of dynamic training and development programmes to help senior managers get the best from their teams and build success through the talent and skills of their people.

“The events on April 29 will be an opportunity for employers to find out more about the training programmes that we have planned and also to tell us about their specific requirements.”

The events will also include information about the Digital Studio College – due to open this September which will heavily involve employers in the curriculum for young people aged 14 to 19.

As well as combining core subjects with computer programming and digital media qualifications, the students will spend part of each week on work placements at local businesses.

Employers are also heavily involved in Derby College’s Career Academies – currently available in ICT, Professional Construction and Engineering – with selected students benefiting from guru lectures, mentoring, work experience and paid internships.

April Hayhurst concluded: “Our role as a College is to prepare young people for their next stage in life and to ensure that the qualifications that we deliver are in line with employer requirements.

“It is therefore vitally important that we involve employers in all aspects of our work to ensure that we are delivering the skilled workforce that they require both in the short and medium term and these events are an opportunity for businesses to be at the heart of our work in further education.”
