Plans to revamp Newark Castle would provide ‘massive’ boost to tourism and local economy

Ambitious plans for Newark Castle could do for tourism in the town what the discovery of King Richard III’s body has done for Leicester, it has been claimed.

Parts of the castle could be brought back into use for the first time in hundreds of years.

The original Norman layout and appearance could also be accurately mapped for the first time.

The Gilstrap and William Edward Knight charities are behind the plans. The sole trustee for both is Newark and Sherwood District Council.

It is hoped the projects could be completed by 2016, the 800th anniversary of the death of King John in the castle in 1216.
