Science Showcase At BioCity

NUAST Science Showcase,BioCity Nottingham,Pennyfoot Street, Tuesday May 20,6pm to 8pm.

Trying a surgery simulator to stitch patients, and checking nerves. Those are some of the hands-on activities that young people and parents can try at a free science showcase event at BioCity Nottingham next week.

Some of the country’s leading academics will lift the lid on the world of medicine and science as part of the evening aimed at Year 9 and Year 10 pupils and their parents. The science showcase is being organised by the Nottingham University Academy of Science and Technology (NUAST).

NUAST is a new £10 million technical academy opening this year for 14 to 19-year-olds that will specialise in science, technology and engineering. The free science showcase takes place at BioCity Nottingham, Pennyfoot Street, on Tuesday May 20 from 6pm to 8pm.

BioCity Nottingham is the home of the UK’s leading ‘bioscience incubator’ for fast growing companies specialising in the biotechnical, healthcare and pharmaceutical industries. For more information visit http://www.biocity.co.uk/contact/biocity-nottingham.

The evening will include talks by leading academics from the fields of astronomy, life sciences and physics. Members of the University of Nottingham Student Surgical Society and the Widening Access To Medical School and Medical Society will also attend.

Regional employers whose businesses are science-based will talk about career options and recruitment. The employers attending include MediCity and Sasie. Visitors will have an opportunity to meet employers supporting NUAST’s curriculum, and to learn more about the courses and qualifications on offer and the careers opportunities they lead to.

Ailsa Gough, NUAST Principal, said:  “NUAST is an exciting new choice for young people across the city offering traditional academic qualifications alongside high quality technical courses to improve students’ chances of getting a job or going onto university.”

She added: “This hands-on and lively event aimed at Year 9 and Year 11 pupils, and their parents, will provide an opportunity to explore study and career options and to question experts in the science field.”

NUAST is being launched to address skills shortages in the East Midlands. Employers will influence the NUAST curriculum, so that learners’ education and training supports regional business needs. Students will complete GCSEs and A Levels as well as technical courses, and gain the qualifications to get a job, develop a career or go onto university.

More than 20 employers are already involved in helping to shape the curriculum and its content by developing projects within an industry and business context. Key supporters include Toshiba, Rolls Royce, Siemens, Experian, Boots, Greene, Tweed, Jacobs, Lindhurst Innovation Engineers, Sharpsmart and SASIE.

NUAST is co-sponsored by Sir Harry Djanogly through the Djanogly Learning Trust, and the University of Nottingham. Its lead employer sponsor is Toshiba. The academy is being built on Abbey Street by BAM Construction, has been designed by Bond Bryan Architects and is funded by the Department for Education. For more information go to www.nuast.org.uk.
