Students showcase their engineering talents

Engineering students at West Nottinghamshire College have been showcasing their talents to major employers.

The college’s inaugural ‘Engineering Showcase’ saw students present their final-year projects –ranging from new product designs to innovative solutions that could be implemented in the workplace – to their employers and tutors.

The students have each completed either the HNC (Higher National Certificate) in electrical and electronic engineering or the HNC in mechanical engineering, which are part of the college’s range of higher education (HE) programmes.

Most are in full-time employment and have attended college on day-release after being sponsored by their employer.

Employers attending the event – held at the college’s Ransom Hall site, Mansfield, on Wednesday 21 May – included Advanex, Calor, Crown Aerosols and Packaging, Deldon-CSE, Laing O’ Rourke, and Nottingham Express Transit.

Andy Ryan, tutor and HE co-ordinator for engineering, said: “Traditionally, students completing these courses have delivered a classroom-based presentation on their final-year work-related project. However, taking a different approach enabled students to showcase their ideas in a more managerial and professional context, as well as develop their wider communication and practical skills.

“It was also useful for employers to see the projects their employees have been working on at college, as well as being an opportunity for those students that aren’t currently in employment to display their talents to prospective employers.

“The HNC courses represent a high level of study and it’s always great to see businesses investing in their staff and grooming the managers of the future.”
