Construction work has begun in Nottingham on the country’s first carbon-neutral laboratory, which is expected to help speed up the discovery of new drugs.
The £20 million Centre for Sustainable Chemistry has been made possible by the University of Nottingham’s biggest corporate gift of £12 million from pharmaceutical giant GlaxoSmithKline (GSK).
It is being built by construction company Morgan Sindall.
When completed in 2015, the laboratory is expected to act as a catalyst for new collaborations with industry.
The innovation in training and development will speed up the translation of discovery to application, according to university vice-chancellor Professor David Greenaway.
