600 Jobs en-route to D2N2-backed enterprise zone

Up to 600 new jobs are on the way to a Derbyshire Enterprise Zone now that two new buildings have been completed.

Logistics company Great Bear Distribution and supply chain specialist Gist are the latest businesses to be handed keys to new premises at the Markham Vale Enterprise Zone – overseen by both the D2N2 and Sheffield City Region Local Enterprise Partnerships (LEPs).

Markham Vale, located on the site of the former Seymour Colliery off junction 29a of the M1, is overseen by both D2N2 and Sheffield City Region LEP. EZ status means that businesses who set up there can benefit from a new, state-of-the-art workspace, as well as possible tax and rate reductions. D2N2 is a partnership of business, local authorities, and skills and training providers which works to promote economic growth and create jobs in Derby, Derbyshire, Nottingham and Nottinghamshire. It also oversees the Nottingham and Derby EZ, which has sites at Infinity Park, Beeston and Boots.

D2N2 and Sheffield City Region also both part-funded another piece of major infrastructure, which has effectively given Markham Vale its own motorway junction and ‘unlocked’ areas of the site for further development. The £7.5million Seymour Link Road (pictured) provides motorway access to Markham Vale and was completed in March of last year (2017). D2N2 put £2.52m into the road’s costs, along with additional funding from Derbyshire County Council and the Sheffield City Region LEP.

Chester-based Great Bear, part of the Culina Group, was established in 1994 and operates in 30 locations nationwide providing warehousing and distribution for clients such as PZ Cussons, BMW, Unilever, Mars and Mondelez. The firm now occupies just under a million sq ft of land at Markham Vale making it the largest business on the site to date and is set to create 400 new jobs at its new distribution centre – its second base at the site..

Gist manages the supply chains for perishable and chilled products for a range of customers in the commercial and industrial sector and has 5,000 employees based at more than 40 sites throughout the UK and Europe. Gist is set to create up to 200 new jobs at its new bespoke, chilled warehouse and storage facility.
