East Midlands cities feature in job growth report

Two cities in the East Midlands have been listed among the best places for job creation in a new report.

The latest Cities Outlook report by Centre for Cities ranked Nottingham as number ten on a list of 64 UK cities for total job creation over the past decade.

It was revealed that between 2004 and 2013, employers in the city created 21,400 jobs.

During the period, companies in Derby also achieved an increase of 6,343 jobs, placing the city tenth on the list of best places for private sector job creation.

Chris Hobson, head of information and representation at East Midlands Chamber, said: “These figures are welcome and reflect what our members have been telling us over the past 12 months in terms of the way many firms have created jobs, invested, expanded and helped to drive the growth we’ve seen in the local – and national – economy.

“Nottingham and Derby are strong, vibrant cities and are home to a broad base of businesses, from SMEs to global brands, with real strengths in advanced manufacturing, logistics, life sciences, green technology and information services.”

Northampton was also third in the UK for start-up businesses. Research found that about 1,440 new businesses launched across the borough in 2013.

David Mackintosh, leader of Northampton Borough Council, added: “We already knew that Northampton was one of the most enterprising places in the country.

“This report shows we have a vibrant business sector, and there can be no doubt that the Northampton Waterside Enterprise Zone has been a contributing factor in that.”
