Skills Summit to focus on better links between employers and education providers

A D2N2 employability expert will speak next week at a Skills Summit, designed to bring employers and education providers together to better identify ways of filling ‘skills gaps’ amongst workforces in the region.

The East Midlands Skills Summit will run from 8am to 1:30pm next Tuesday (June 9), at the National College for Teaching & Leadership in Triumph Road, Nottingham. It will include practical workshops and presentations, on how the skills and training programmes offered in the area might better meet the knowledge needed in its workplaces.

One of the Summit’s speakers will be the Director of Enterprise & Marketing at Evolve Trust, Berni Dickinson. She will explain about the work she and others are doing at the D2N2 Local Enterprise Partnership, on the Employability Framework. The Framework emphasises why and how young people should meet employers and working people, and the motivational and entrepreneurial benefits this can bring them. In future, it is hoped the Framework will be used by D2N2 schools and employers, to help young people feel more ready for the working world.

Other speakers at the event will be from the UK Commission for Employment and Skills, focusing on driving leadership and management quality; from Centre for Cities, discussing how national governments can help cities support young people in getting sustainable employment; and from the National Apprenticeship Service, looking at the new Apprenticeship reforms, and their impact on employers and the learners.

D2N2 – the Local Enterprise Partnership for Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire – has its own Skills for Growth Strategy, invests European and other funding in skills promotion and recently launched a Provider Charter, again aimed at getting employers more involved with designing training programmes, to ensure local skills meets employers’ needs.
