The public are being encouraged this month (December) to view and comment on the first detailed plans for a £150million revamp of Nottingham city-centre’s intu Broadmarsh centre, which is being backed and co-funded by the D2N2 Local Enterprise Partnership.
When completed, the major project is expected to boost the local economy by over £1billion a year, create nearly 3,000 jobs for local people and attract an extra three million people a year to the city.
The proposals detail site owner intu’s vision for a vibrant new southern gateway into Nottingham from the train station. The D2N2 Local Enterprise Partnership has given £10.4m from its Local Growth Fund to help pay for road and building alterations linked to the project, to create a more pedestrian-friendly welcome to Nottingham’s city-centre.
Significant changes to the streets in the Broadmarsh area include:
- Creating a brand new public space on Collin Street linking intu Broadmarsh with the new cafés and other commercial outlets on the ground floor of the car park building, and creating a pedestrian-friendly street.
- High quality paving with landscaping, public art, a water feature and outdoor cafés, transforming it into a safe and attractive space for people to enjoy.
- The public space will be capable of hosting major events in the day and night, helping to further boost the city’s reputation for hosting top-class entertainment and activities.
- Improving pedestrian approaches from the south with upgraded streets, safer junctions and better pedestrian flows in the area.
- Re-routing traffic currently using Collin Street and Canal Street onto London Road, Queen’s Road, Sheriffs Way and Waterway Street West; moving buses currently stopping at Collin Street onto Canal Street to better connect with the transformed bus station; and relocating the car park’s vehicle entrance/exit to Middle Hill.
The Broadmarsh area proposals and images of how the changed area might look can be viewed now in the Lister Gate Square, in the intu Broadmarsh centre, until Tuesday December 22.

A planning application for the first phase of the intu development, to transform the Broadmarsh car park and bus station, was submitted to Nottingham City Council on December 1.
The deadline to make comments on the planning application is Tuesday January 5, 2016, after which it will be considered by the City Council’s Planning Committee, in early 2016.
Work on the Broadmarsh redevelopment is due to begin in the first half of 2016 and will be delivered in stages, with the entire scheme expected to take four years to complete.
