Businesses and residents have until February 20 to comment on the proposed second phase of a major Nottingham City Council cycle scheme being part-funded by the D2N2 Local Enterprise Partnership.
The £6.1m Nottingham Cycle City Ambition Programme (NCCAP), due to be completed by spring 2017, aims to improve travel for current cyclists, and encourage others to take to two wheels for. It will:
- build four state-of-the-art commuter cycle corridors, running North-South and East-West;
- improve existing city-centre and neighbourhood area cycleways;
- create a ‘greenway’ for cyclists, including an on-road cycle lane along the River Leen and at Colwick Park, The Embankment, Wollaton Park and Broxtowe County Park.
Work is well underway on the network’s Western cycle corridor (which takes in Castle Boulevard), with that first phase due to be completed this spring (2016).
Public consulation has now opened on the Southern corridor. It will build on cycle improvements introduced as part of the Clifton tram extension; and connect existing tram route sections, and paths running from Nottingham city centre to Clifton, Clifton South Park and Ride, and Nottingham Trent University’s Clifton campus. This will ultimately create more than 11kilometres of non-stop cycle routes.
Businesses and residents on or affected by the cycle route plans can comment on them online at website http://transport2.nottinghamcity.gov.uk/cycle/ , where there is also more information and an interactive map. Comments must be submitted by Saturday February 20, after which they will be reviewed by Nottingham City Council.
Work on the Northern and Eastern cycle corridors will begin in the next few months, with a view to the whole scheme being delivered by March 2017.
D2N2’s £6.1m funding in the cycle network improvements is from its £192million Local Growth Fund (LGF) allocation from Government. LGF is chiefly used for major capital investments, to help build the infrastructure – roads, skills and training centres, Enterprise Zone sites – necessary to support economic growth.
Peter Richardson, Chairman of the D2N2 Local Enterprise Partnership, said: “The Nottingham Cycle City Ambition Programme not only has the potential to make significant health improvements; reduced traffic congestion means quicker movement of goods and people, and less air pollution makes the city more attractive to live in, which both have long term economic benefits.”
Councillor Nick McDonald, Portfolio Holder for Jobs, Growth and Transport at Nottingham City Council, added: “The Southern Cycle Corridor is the second phase of the new Nottingham City Cycle Ambition routes being developed. It will improve city centre cycling links by building on already existing improvements and joining up the route to make it more direct, safe and pleasant to travel along.”
