Foundations are laid for 400 new jobs at Markham Vale

Work has now started on a new 225,000sq. ft. distribution centre at the only enterprise zone (EZ) in the country to be overseen by two Local Enterprise Partnerships (LEPs).

Markham Vale, located just off junction 29a of the M1, is set to welcome its latest occupant to the site – automotive component specialists Ferdinand Bilstein UK – in a move which will relocate two of its offices from Kent and Pontefract, creating up to 400 new jobs. Its new distribution centre is scheduled for completion by the end of this year (2016) and is being built by Henry Boot Developments, allowing Ferdinand Bilstein to take advantage of the excellent transport links offered by the site.

Markham Vale, located on the site of the former Seymour Colliery off junction 29a of the M1, is overseen by both the D2N2 and Sheffield City Region Local Enterprise Partnerships. EZ status means that businesses who set up there can benefit from a new, state-of-the-art workspace, as well as possible tax and rate reductions. D2N2 is a partnership of business, local authorities, and skills and training providers which works to promote economic growth and create jobs in Derby, Derbyshire, Nottingham and Nottinghamshire. It also oversees the Nottingham and Derby EZ, which has sites at Infinity Park, Beeston and Boots.

D2N2 and Sheffield City Region are also both part-funding another piece of major infrastructure, which will effectively give Markham Vale its own motorway junction and ‘unlock’ areas of the site for further development. The £7.5million Seymour Link Road will provide motorway access to Markham Vale and is set to be completed by October of this year (2016). D2N2 is putting £2.52m into the road’s costs, with additional funding from Derbyshire County Council and the Sheffield City Region LEP.

David Ralph, D2N2 Chief Executive said:

“Developing Enterprise Zone sites is key to our economic ambitions and at the heart of D2N2’s Strategic Economic Plan, with its overarching ambition to create 55,000 new private sector jobs in key industries, over ten years.

“To that end we are not only investing in Markham Vale, which will benefit hugely from the Seymour Link Road to the M1, but also the Nottingham and Derby Enterprise Zone sites.”
