A key infrastructure project which has redesigned the area around Nottingham Station (pictured) – part funded by the D2N2 LEP – has now been completed.
The area between Trent Street (NG2 3BZ) and Carrington Street (NG1 7FG) has been turned into a pedestrianised zone, making space for an easily accessible paved area for pedestrians and cyclists. It is now also available for outdoor café seating and pop-up market stalls. It now features new paving and road surfaces, new traffic management measures and enhancements to the appearance of the area.
This redevelopment is as part of the wider Southern Gateway project, which, along with the Station Street pedestrianisation, will aim to renovate the area between Nottingham Station and the intu Broadmarsh shopping centre. It is being given £10.4million from D2N2’s – the Local Enterprise Partnership serving Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire – £192million Local Growth Fund allocation.
When completed in 2020, the renovation of the Southern Gateway area is expected to boost the local economy by over £1billion a year, create nearly 3,000 jobs for local people and attract an extra three million people a year to the city. The recently completed Station Street works –and the scheduled Southern Gateway works – also compliment the Nottingham Cycle City ambition – a new network of cycle corridors which span east-west and north-south with city centre links – which is also being funded by D2N2 (£6.1m Local Growth Fund).
Additional changes that have been made to the Station Street area as part of the recent pedestrianisation include:
- Moving taxis to new taxi ranks on Trent Street and a new rank off Queens Road for passengers using the station lifts.
- Providing vehicle access to the remaining section of Station Street through a one-way system from Canal Street via Trent Street onto Station Street and to London Road
- Increasing parking availability on Station Street (east of Trent Street).
Minor additional works (also pictured) on the project will take place throughout August and September of this year (2016) and will consist of planting trees and installing new street lights, as well as laying a small amount of paving which could not be done during the main course of works due to scaffolding obstructions. Traffic management will be in force, with access turning right from Trent Street on to Station Street stopped except for works vehicles and local business parking. There will be no access to Station Street from its junction with Carrington Street.
This means from the 1st August access to Station Street will be from Canal Street and Trent Street, there will be no access from London Road into Station Street (except for cycles). On the Station side of Station Street vehicles will not be allowed to stop at any time until all the works have been completed, this will be signed on site.
