Melanie Ulyatt, Founder and Chief Executive of Chesterfield-based One to One Support Services, Chair of the Federation of Small Businesses in Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire, Chair of the D2N2 Skills Commission and D2N2 Board Member (pictured), has been awarded an MBE in this year’s New Year’s Honours List.
Each year an honours committee selects people across the UK for recognition of work done in their particular field. This year almost 1,200 people across the UK were chosen to receive an award and 26 of those were from the D2N2 area of Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire. For her services to entrepreneurship and business, Melanie received an MBE for her work as Chair of the Federation of Small Businesses for Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire – a national body which works to help smaller businesses grow by offering support and expertise. Since July of 2015, Melanie has also chaired the D2N2 Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP)’s Skills Commission, which governs the delivery of its Skills for Growth Strategy for a skilled workforce across Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire.
The D2N2 LEP works with businesses, local authorities, community and voluntary organisations and skills and training providers to make Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire more economically prosperous. By investing in business infrastructure and helping its areas businesses to access funding and grow, D2N2 hopes to help create 55,000 new jobs in ten years (2013-2023) and a step-change in the area’s skills offering.
The D2N2 Board – which governs its activities – uses the collective knowledge, experience and expertise of its members to review D2N2’s work and help steer its future efforts, ensuring that it delivers effectively. Melanie represents skills in her capacity as a D2N2 Board Member, and along with her work leading the D2N2 Skills Commission, continues to help ensure that the future workforce of Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire will meet the needs of D2N2 area businesses.
Several initiatives led by the D2N2 Skills Commission include the D2N2 Employability Framework and Enterprise Adviser Network, which both aim to help strengthen links between schools and employers and give young people the tools, skills and aspirations necessary for the modern workforce.
