Market project gets £100,000 D2N2 backing

Works worth £300,000 to improve Bulwell Market in Nottingham and help local traders is due to get underway this week – with a third of the funding coming from the D2N2 Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP).

The Bulwell Market works around Pilkington Street are set to create an improved area and extra seating for shoppers and visitors, as well as larger space for the existing Market area (pictured). It is hoped this will enable the space to host different types of markets, such as craft fairs and food markets, to generate extra customer footfall. The improvements are due for completion by Easter (2017).

Costs are being covered with a £200,000 investment from Nottingham City Council and £100,000 from D2N2’s Local Growth Fund (LGF) allocation.

D2N2 is the LEP for Nottingham, Nottinghamshire, Derby and Derbyshire area. It works with area local authorities, businesses, skills and training providers, and community and voluntary organisations to help create a more competitive, resilient and prosperous economy, with the aim of creating 55,000 new jobs in ten years.

A significant part of D2N2’s funding is the £192million allocated through the Government’s Local Growth Fund; which is used to invest in infrastructure which promotes economic prosperity and jobs numbers.

Councillor Graham Chapman, Portfolio Holder for Neighbourhood Regeneration at Nottingham City Council, said: “Bulwell Market is already a great place, and once these works are complete it will be even better with even more places to shop, providing a more attractive space and the opportunity to expand it with new ideas and market stalls.

“We are leading a number of projects in Nottingham to make it a better and more attractive city for people to live in and visit, not just in the city centre but in neighbourhoods like Bulwell.”

Other Nottingham projects D2N2 has provided LGF funding for include £6.1m for the Nottingham Cycle City Ambition project, which will create a series of cycle corridors running East-West and North-South in the city, and £6.5m for the BioCity Nottingham building extension; both currently under construction.
