A52 Developments given Government boost

£2.6m of additional funding is being given by Highways England to contribute to a series of major infrastructure developments in Derby – part-funded by the D2N2 Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP).

The A52 (pictured), which runs from Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, to Skegness, Lincolnshire, connects Derby and Nottingham city centres and is a vital transport link in the Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire (D2N2) area. Derby City Council, Highways England and the D2N2 LEP are all co-funding the £14m scheme, which will aim to improve the highway, address congestion problems and improve conditions for pedestrians and cyclists.

D2N2, the LEP for the Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire area, is providing just under half (£6.72m) of the total £14m project cost from its Local Growth Fund (LGF) allocation, given by Government to help the LEP achieve its target of creating 55,000 new jobs in ten years (2013-2023). It is hoped that the A52 Wyvern works will help unlock up to 3,000 jobs in Derby.

Other Derbyshire infrastructure projects which D2N2 has helped to fund through its Local Growth Fund allocation include:

  • Our City, Our River – which will aim to provide flood defences at strategic points along the River Derwent.
  • The T12 Link Road – which provides access to the A50 from Derby’s Infinity Park.
  • The Chesterfield Centre for Higher Level Skills – providing a University Campus and innovation centre in Chesterfield.and
  • Buxton Crescent – which will consist of restoring Buxton’s heritage spa to create a 5-star hotel in the Peak District

The £2.6m given by Highways England is as part of a £12.45 million contribution from its £100m Growth and Housing Fund – set up as part of Government’s £15 billion national investment in road improvements that are needed for new developments – towards a number of schemes across the country. The improvements, worth a total of £75m will create opportunities around Derby and Daventry in the Midlands, Oldham in the North West, Durham in the North East and Taunton in the South West.
