Residents will be consulted on plans for an £860,000 cycle network in Newark, funded via the D2N2 Local Enterprise Partnership.
Nottinghamshire County Council secured the funding from the Local Growth Fund (LGF) allocation of the D2N2 Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP); the private sector-led LEP of business, local authorities, skills and training providers, and community and voluntary services which promotes economic and jobs growth across Derby, Derbyshire, Nottingham and Nottinghamshire. LGF funding is used to jointly fund capital projects creating the infrastructure (including roads and transport networks) which will aid economic development.
Proposed new cycle route options are for Mill Gate, Hawton Road, Grange Road, Hawton Lane, Windsor Road, Bowbridge Road, Brunel Drive and Lincoln Road in Newark. Maps of the suggested cycle routes and more information on the scheme can be found at web link www.nottinghamshire.gov.uk/transport/roads/newark-cycle-network
The cycle network scheme will aim to:
- make cycling to work a viable choice for residents;
- improve the cycle infrastructure network by addressing gaps in it, seen as a barrier to accessing large jobs and housing sites;
- deliver benefits such as better public health (through more people exercising), and reduced vehicle emissions and traffic congestion.
Public consultation events on the plans, to decide which routes should go ahead, are currently being held. The next events will be on
- Saturday September 23 (from 10am until 3pm) – at Holy Trinity Community Centre, Boundary Road, Newark;
- Wednesday September 27 (2.30pm until 6.30pm) – at Bridge Community Centre, Lincoln Road, Newark.
Feedback on the proposals can also be given via an online questionnaire, which will be live throughout this month (September) at web link https://consult.nottinghamshire.gov.uk/planning/newark-cycling-strategy/
Construction of the cycle routes would be undertaken by Via East Midlands Ltd, a joint venture company between Nottinghamshire County Council and CORSERV (a Cornwall Council company), with works expected to begin in January 2018.
It is hoped that world-class cycling events, such as the University of Nottingham’s Cycling Grand Prix, held earlier this year (pictured), will be able to be held in Newark and the surrounding area, thanks to Nottinghamshire’s investment in sustainable transport.
