£2.9m grant funding for D2N2 area bridge scheme

A new pedestrian and cycle link bridge over the A46 near Bingham has been allocated a £2.9million grant from a Government fund, following a successful funding bid by Rushcliffe Borough Council and the D2N2 Local Enterprise Partnership.

Highways England has announced the funding from its national Growth and Housing Fund; a £100m fund established to provide investment towards the cost of road improvements needed for new developments, which are providing new jobs and homes.

The planned link bridge over the A46 will improve connections between the former RAF Newton site – where it is planned to build up to 550 new homes – and transport links and public services in nearby Bingham. New housing is also proposed to be built in Bingham.

The bridge scheme is also due to be backed by £970,000 in private sector funding.

The link bridge funding is one of five schemes in England newly announced as benefiting from Highways England’s Growth and Housing Fund.

Jim O’Sullivan, Highways England Chief Executive, said: “We will continue to use our Growth and Housing Fund, working with a range of local stakeholders to unlock further development sites around the country.”

Highways England and Rushcliffe Borough Council will now need to agree a contract specifying a timetable for delivery of the major scheme.
