Grand Tour returns to D2N2 area

Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire will become even bigger cultural tourism destinations this spring (2018), as Season Three of The Grand Tour is launched this weekend (March 24) – part-funded by the D2N2 Local Enterprise Partnership.

This collaborative programme will give visitors to the two counties the opportunity to view current area art collections, as well as exciting new works by leading contemporary artists. Visitors will be able to explore the area’s heritage and enjoy its landscapes, gardens, cities and towns.

The Grand Tour has previously run two seasons, in 2015 and 2016, linking cultural attractions in Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire; through destination partners Chatsworth House, the Nottingham Contemporary gallery (pictured left), Derby Museums and the Harley Gallery near Worksop, amongst others. Established collections are re-interpreted by new artists, or exhibited alongside complementary modern works.

The Grand Tour initiative is funded by Arts Council England’s Cultural Destinations programme, with support from VisitEngland. The D2N2 LEP invested around £35,000 in its first two Seasons and will again be providing funding (£15,000) for Season Three.

D2N2 is a partnership of business, local authorities, skills and training providers, and community and voluntary services which promotes economic and jobs growth across Derby, Derbyshire Nottingham and Nottinghamshire. It has eight key commercial sectors which it promotes; including the visitor or tourist economy.

Season Three of The Grand Tour will focus on creation and discovery, and exploring the area’s strong industrial heritage and legacy. Exhibitions and cultural events – all set to run from this Saturday (March 24) – will include:

  • Chatsworth House – An exhibition entitled, ‘Linder, An Artist in Residency’, (to run from March 24 to October 21) will showcase new works by influential British artist Linder Stelling. Linder will also be involved with an exhibition called ‘The House of Fame’ at Nottingham Contemporary (pictured), which will be a collection of her work from the past 40 years.
  • The Harley Gallery – An exhibition entitled ‘Half in Shadow: Half in Light’, (March 24 to June 30), is a collaboration with the British artist Clare Twomey and will explore life on the historic Welbeck estate.
  • Derby Museum & Art Gallery’s exhibition ‘The Art of Industry: From Joseph Wright to the 21st Century’ (March 24 to June 30) will look back at the region’s industrial history and manufacturing landscape, through both historic artefacts and contemporary interpretations.

As in previous seasons, The Grand Tour will be extended with a host of fringe venues providing opportunities to experience a broad range of art and culture.
