A new cycle and pedestrian bridge aimed at better linking employment sites and public transport in Nottinghamshire – part-funded by the D2N2 Local Enterprise Partnership – has been lowered into place.
The 50-metre bridge connects the Boots Enterprise Zone site – one of four sites making up the wider Nottingham & Derby Enterprise Zone, within the D2N2 LEP area – directly with Nottingham Science Park and University Boulevard.
It was installed over a six hour period early yesterday morning (Sunday August 26) to minimise disruption to rail services, as the bridge also goes over a stretch of the Midland Main Line railway.
In October 2016 Nottingham City Council was awarded funding from the D2N2 LEP to upgrade pedestrian and cycle links on the Boots site. D2N2 – a private sector-led partnership of business, local authorities, skills and training providers, and community groups which promotes economic growth across Derby, Derbyshire, Nottingham and Nottinghamshire – is investing £6million in the Boots’ Enterprise Zone site’s infrastructure.
The bridge will be reached by a footpath and cycleway off University Boulevard, along a new road between the tennis centre and land earmarked for future science park developments. After crossing the Midland Main Line, the path will follow around the Boots site and connect with Thane Road and the Beeston canal.
Mark Chivers, Director of the Nottingham Enterprise Zone at Boots, said: “With thousands of people accessing the Boots site every day, the new cycle and pedestrian bridge will create a whole new way for people to get into work and access the site and Enterprise Zone by extending a link to the tram and bus services from Nottingham University tram stop.”
Construction firm Eurovia will continue to build the ramps and associated paths ahead of the full path opening early next year (2019).
