The redevelopment of the Broadmarsh Car Park, part of the Southern Gateway project, took a big step forward today (July 22) with a groundbreaking ceremony held to herald the beginning of construction work.
The ceremony, organised by Nottingham City Council and Galliford Try, featured D2N2 Local Enterprise Partnership Deputy Chair David Williams (pictured centre left) alongside Nottingham City Council Leader David Mellen and other dignitaries.
With demolition and groundwork now complete on-site, construction of the car park will begin with completion due in 2021.
Nottingham Southern Gateway Project
The redevelopment of the intu Broadmarsh shopping centre and its surrounding area in Nottingham city is part of a wider £250million regeneration, termed the ‘Southern Gateway’ to the city centre.
The project also incorporates Nottingham’s main train station, Nottingham Castle (itself also receiving funding via the D2N2 LEP), Canal Street, the Broadmarsh bus station and the surrounding road network.
D2N2 has invested around £25million from its Local Growth Fund allocation into the Southern Gateway project.
Commenting at the groundbreaking ceremony, David Williams said: “D2N2 see the opportunity the Broadmarsh Car Park, Bus Station and Library together with other projects in the Southern Gateway creates for Nottingham. It’s our mandate to help create jobs and grow economies which is why we’re supporting these projects.”
“All the evidence says that supporting this type of development acts as a stimulus for a city. If you look around Nottingham, you can already see the progress at the Castle and Nottingham College City Hub which will undoubtedly lead to strong positive outcomes for the city.”
David Mellen, Leader of Nottingham City Council said: “The redevelopment of the Broadmarsh area has felt like a long time coming, but now it’s happening and the work being done now will see things quickly progress. While work has been underway for some time, for many the laying of foundations will mark the real start of works on the site.
“Now construction work is visibly underway both here and at intu Broadmarsh, Nottingham’s citizens will benefit from the new construction jobs and training in the city, and subsequently when the developments are complete. We can look forward to a fantastic new area, bringing a variety of new jobs, the best children’s library in the country and a welcoming Broadmarsh area Nottingham can be proud of.”
D2N2 is the private sector-led Partnership of business, local authorities, skills and training providers, and community and voluntary services representatives which promotes economic growth across Derby, Derbyshire, Nottingham and Nottinghamshire.
Local Growth Fund
The LEP has been allocated more than £250m from the Government’s Local Growth Fund; to jointly invest in infrastructure projects which directly boost the economy.
Local Enterprise Partnerships are playing a vital role in driving forward economic growth across the country, helping to build a country that works for everyone. That’s why by 2021 Government will have invested over £12billion through the Local Growth Fund, allowing LEPs to use their local knowledge to get all areas of the country firing on all cylinders. UK Government analysis has shown that every £1 of Local Growth Fund invested could generate £4.81 in benefits.
