Construction on the Gedling Access Road is expected to begin today (6 January) after D2N2 Local Enterprise Partnership approved its share of funding for the project.
D2N2 will contribute £10.8m from its Local Growth Fund allocation towards the construction of the Gedling Access Road (GAR). D2N2 is funding the project in line with its remit to support economic growth across Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire to create a more productive, sustainable, and inclusive region.
The investment in the new access road will result in unlocking significant new jobs and homes for the area whilst creating a more sustainable and reliable transport infrastructure for Gedling and the surrounding area.
Main construction work is due to last 18 months, once complete in the Autumn of 2021, the almost 4km long road will run between the existing A612 Trent Valley Road/Nottingham Road and the B684 Mapperley Plains Road.
The GAR will link to the existing highway network across 7 key junctions, one of which will link to the redevelopment of the former Gedling Colliery site.
The ‘Gedling Housing Zone’ will be a mix of over 1000 homes and commercial properties supporting 200 jobs.

When complete, the GAR will also create a bypass link to the east of Gedling, and consequently Nottingham city centre, therefore improving the connectivity of the local road network whilst simultaneously reducing traffic congestion, particularly in Gedling Village.
In line with other projects funded by D2N2 to encourage clean growth and sustainable transport, the GAR will also feature a 3m wide pedestrian and cycle path along its length.
The £10.8m contribution from D2N2 is part of an overall package of funding which includes £17m from Keepmoat Homes, £5.4m from Nottinghamshire County Council, and £7.1m from the Home & Community Agency totalling over £40m.
