Nottingham city centre developments are taking significant steps forward, as part of a wider £250million strategy backed by the D2N2 Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP).
The Broadmarsh area of Nottingham city centre – encompassing Nottingham railway station, Station Street, the intu Broadmarsh centre and surrounding roads – is known as the ‘Southern Gateway’. It is undergoing a long term, major redevelopment set to cost an estimated £250million.
Two key parts of the overall development have now taken significant steps forward:
- Broadmarsh car park, part of the intu Broadmarsh centre, closes today (August 7). It is set to be demolished and another car park built to replace it, due to be completed by the end of 2019.
- An official tender notice has been published to find a main contractor to build the Nottingham City Hub on Canal Street, near the intu Broadmarsh centre. The skills and training facility, to be run by Nottingham College (formed by the June 2017 merger of New College Nottingham and Central College) is set to open on-site by September 2020. Its £60m cost is due to be covered by £19m from Nottingham City Council, College funds and up to £30m from D2N2 (subject to the College’s detailed business plan).
D2N2 – which works with business, local authorities, skills and training providers, and community and voluntary organisations to boost the economy of Nottingham, Nottinghamshire, Derby and Derbyshire – has already invested £10.3million into the Southern Gateway works, via its Local Growth Fund (LGF) allocation. Further LGF investment is indicated for the Nottingham City Hub (as mentioned above) subject to its business plan.
The Southern Gateway project also includes:
- redevelopment of the intu Broadmarsh shopping centre; (artist impression pictured)
- creation of a new public space on Collin Street, which will be pedestrianised;
- pedestrianisation of (upper) Carrington Street;
- better linking of Nottingham Castle to the city, with investment improving the Castle’s visitor offer.
Commenting on the publication of the Nottingham City Hub contract tender notice, D2N2 Chief Executive David Ralph said: “Nottingham has ambitious plans to increase economic growth and the prosperity of its communities, and deliver a step change in the skills of local residents.
“The publication of this invitation to tender for the new Nottingham City Hub marks a definitive step to help create a College of and for the city. I am confident it will provide a real opportunity to develop the skills local employers need. Working in partnership with schools, local employers, our universities and other skills providers, Nottingham City Hub will help raise productivity, leading to improved opportunities and quality of life for Nottingham’s citizens.”
