LEPs lead further talks between business and government

Local business leaders from across the country have had another opportunity to put their views to government ministers on the impact of COVID-19 to help build the recovery in a series of virtual roundtables led by Local Enterprise Partnerships.

Following a constructive information session in June, business leaders from across the East Midlands met with government Ministers in the second of a series of virtual regional roundtables. They shared their challenges as well as heard directly from the Minister on what is being done to incentivise investment, levelling up and develop the low carbon economy.

D2N2 Interim Chair David Williams co-led the East Midlands roundtable discussion with colleagues from the West Midlands.

The Midland LEPs, organised the roundtable discussion with the Minister for Business and Industry, Nadhim Zahawi MP, the Minister for Regional Growth and Local Government, to improve understanding among ministers of the needs of businesses in the Midlands, as well as actions required to help stimulate the economy in the coming months.

The outputs from these roundtables will feed directly into the government’s work on economic recovery.

D2N2 Interim Chair, David Williams said: “Today’s business roundtable provided a crucial platform to enable local businesses to engage with government to encourage support for rebalancing the economy.”

“The value that our local businesses will play in the next phase of recovery and rebuilding the local economy is critical. These roundtables are an important opportunity to listen to the concerns of local businesses about COVID-19 and help us deliver strong local economies.”

Business and Industry Minister Nadhim Zahawi said: “Supporting business and driving economic recovery in every corner of the UK has been the government’s top priority during our response to the coronavirus crisis.”

“Enabling us to understand the experience and challenges of local businesses in real-time, these sessions allow us to make sure we’re supporting Local Enterprise Partnership plans to stimulate growth and recovery on a local level.”
