New Year’s honour for D2N2 Board member

The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Nottingham and D2N2 Board member, Professor Shearer West has been awarded a CBE for services to education in the New Year’s Honours List for 2021.

Professor Shearer West is the seventh Vice-Chancellor and President of the University of Nottingham, taking up office on 2 October 2017, publishing the institution’s new University Strategy in December 2019.

She is currently a member of the Universities UK Board to help deliver its mission to maximise the higher education sector’s positive impact for staff, students and the public, through the highest quality teaching, research and scholarship. She is also a Trustee of the National Portrait Gallery and a member of the Independent Schools Governing Body of King Edward’s Foundation, Birmingham.

Professor Shearer West, represents the region’s Higher Education providers on the D2N2 Board and is the Chair of the D2N2 People and Skills Advisory Board.

Reacting to the news, Professor West said: “I feel humbled and privileged at being recognised in the Queen’s New Year’s Honours for services to higher education. I have a passionate belief in the value of education and research to transform lives and communities, and have been fortunate to learn from so many capable and committed colleagues over many years who have shared this vision.

Commander of the British Empire

The CBE was established in 1917 as part of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire and is awarded for prominent national or regional achievements. British nationals, citizens of the Commonwealth, or anyone who has made a significant achievement for the United Kingdom are eligible to be nominated for the award.

Like the Knighthood and the Dames Grand Cross, the CBE is limited to 8960 people at any one time.
