Young people get hands-on experience of potential NHS careers with D2N2 Careers Hub

‘Medical Mavericks’ workshops will inspire children to pursue a career in medicine by giving a realistic idea of the opportunities available

Five schools in the D2N2 area will benefit from innovative hands-on workshops where they’ll get chance to take blood, record and print an ECG, use ultrasound machines and even try their hand at keyhole surgery!

The workshops are designed to be completely different to normal classroom lessons, introducing dozens of careers in the NHS to students and helping them to see the links between school, lessons and life – and will include careers guidance throughout.

With the skills gap becoming ever apparent, Medical Mavericks aims to showcase the range of careers in the NHS – including many which young people might not be aware of. After they’ve taken part in the programme, students will have realistic careers ambitions and know what is required to achieve their goals, helping them to stay motivated in the classroom.

Funding has been agreed for five schools in the region to take part in the experience – including one school for people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities. In total 1006 young people will benefit from the programme before the end of the summer term.

Will Morlidge, Chief Executive at D2N2 LEP said: “Bringing the worlds of work and education together is a vital part of our strategy to lead a green recovery from the impact of Covid-19.

“The unique opportunity experienced by the young people at the schools running Medical Mavericks workshops will really showcase the breath of careers available in our NHS, and by raising the aspirations of those involved, we’re confident our young people will take their motivation back to the classroom as they complete their studies”
