Nottingham College students quiz East Midlands mayoral candidates

On 2 May, elections will take place across the D2N2 region for the first ever East Midlands mayor, who will cover Derby, Derbyshire, Nottingham and Nottinghamshire; a momentous event in the devolution process for the East Midlands.

Three mayoral candidates, Claire Ward (Labour), Ben Bradley (Conservative) and Matt Relf (Independent), were at Nottingham College’s City Hub campus earlier this month, engaging with around 100 college students on the forthcoming Mayoral election, sharing their ideas and views about their priorities for the East Midlands region.

Lana Jay, our Strategic Careers Hub Lead, attended the event and said:

“It was refreshing to see youth voice at the centre of such an important event. The enthusiasm from the student community was clear to see, with a real buzz surrounding the college.

The students asked important and insightful questions around the policies, ideas and thoughts of the candidates, challenging them to consider the impact that they will have on the community, referencing the identity of the region, education, training and future career opportunities.

All candidates referenced skills and the importance of young people having opportunities to make ambitious decisions surrounding their futures. It is clear that change is wanted and I feel hopeful for the talented young people we have in the region.”
