North Nottinghamshire College in Worksop has teamed up with a local manufacturing business to recruit up to ten new apprentices.
Explore Manufacturing in Steetley, Worksop is part of Laing O’Rourke – an international engineering and construction group working across a wide range of sectors.
Explore Manufacturing is one of Europe’s largest and most advanced precast concrete facilities, manufacturing a range of products including walls, floors, columns, beams and station platforms for Laing O’Rourke projects throughout the UK. The components are designed specifically for each project, manufactured in the factory and then assembled on site.
Some of the projects where these techniques have been used include The Francis Crick Institute at London’s Kings Cross, the A453 highway improvements in Nottingham and the new Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in Liverpool.
The company is committed to apprenticeships to address future skills shortages in the industry. It has employed more than ten apprentices over the past three years and due to a growing order book, is now recruiting more people at its state-of-the-art factory.
Michelle Howell, senior human resources advisor at the company, explained: “We are committed to attracting people into the construction and engineering industries and our apprenticeship programme in partnership with North Notts College is an important aspect of that work.
“We are looking for up to ten young people who will start on site this summer and will go to College on day release to complete their Performing Manufacturing Operations apprenticeship.
“It was important for us to work with the College to maintain our close links with the community and provide valuable work and training opportunities for local young people to address potential skills shortages in the future.”
NNC Programme Manager Kath Thorpe added: “This is a fantastic opportunity for young people, including our own students, to gain nationally recognised qualifications and valuable work experience at company which is revolutionising the process of construction.”
