Business community gives big thumbs up to Recruiting Talent Expo

Nine in every ten attendees at ‘Recruiting Talent’ are now considering using alternative approaches to filling their vacancies and future talent supply following the July event.

93% of those surveyed said the event had inspired them to change their working practices with some electing to now hold open mornings for vacancies so applicants can meet staff and see the working environment before they apply.

Other businesses have now pledged to increase their engagement with schools and colleges, take on apprentices, and promote total inclusion.

The free event – designed to enable employers to learn, share, and discuss new approaches to recruiting talented employees – was hosted by Derby College; with event support from East Midlands Chamber, the D2N2 Local Enterprise Partnership and D2N2 Growth Hub, Federation of Small Businesses, Nottingham Jobs, Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue, DWP, The Prince’s Trust, Experience Works, Groundwork Greater Nottingham, All About Demolition, Motorpoint, Derby City Council Apprenticeship Hub and Flint Bishop.

Attendees enjoyed presentations by key speakers such as D2N2 Chair Elizabeth Fagan, as well as an exhibitor marketplace, and workshops on a range of topics from employment law to diversifying the workforce.

D2N2 Head of People and Skills Rachel Quinn said of the remarkable approval rating: “As the labour market tightens in D2N2, employers must look beyond traditional pools of talent to find the skills they need to increase productivity.”

“It’s great to see so many businesses recognise the difficulties in recruitment that we all face and be proactive in meeting those challenges.”

Given the overwhelmingly positive response from business, further events will now be planned.

 Strategic Economic Plan

The D2N2 Local Enterprise Partnership is the private sector-led partnership of business, local authorities, skills and training providers, and community and voluntary services which promotes economic growth across Derby, Derbyshire, Nottingham and Nottinghamshire.

As outlined in Vision 2030, D2N2’s Strategic Economic Plan designed to further support productivity, prosperity, and inclusiveness across the Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire economy, the organisation is driving towards helping those with complex needs into work, reducing the barriers to employment across the region, and improving workforce skills so that they meet the needs of business.

This ambition will involve encouraging the collaboration between business and our communities to give residents of D2N2 the skills and inspiration to broaden their career horizons and the businesses of Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire the talent to create a more productive, prosperous, and inclusive future.
