D2N2 Chair attends first conference on UK Industrial Strategy progress

Elizabeth Fagan, Chair of the D2N2 Local Enterprise Partnership, joined fellow senior business and LEP leaders at the first national conference looking at progress to date on the UK’s Industrial Strategy.

The joint City of London and Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) event yesterday afternoon (May 16) at the Lord Mayor of London’s official residence, Mansion House, included speakers such as Business Secretary Greg Clark MP (pictured far left, at event panel).

The Secretary of State launched the Government’s Industrial Strategy in November 2017; as a plan to boost the economy, build on the country’s strengths and embrace technological change. The Strategy identified four ‘Grand Challenges’, global trends which the UK must address in its economic planning in order to grow, which are:

  • artificial intelligence and the data revolution;
  • clean growth, shifting UK industry to cleaner (less polluting, carbon free) growth;
  • the ageing society;
  • future of mobility and how people, goods and services are moved in future.

England’s 37 LEPs are in the process of using the UK Industrial Strategy as a basis for each creating their own Local Industrial Strategy (LIS), tailored to meet the needs of their different area economies.

The D2N2 LEP – the private sector-led Partnership which promotes economic growth across Derby, Derbyshire, Nottingham and Nottinghamshire – is currently gathering evidence for and developing its own LIS. For more information see the D2N2 LEP website at www.d2n2lep.org/Growth/Evidence-Base/Local-Industry-Strategy

A draft version of D2N2’s LIS is to be presented to its Board in the summer, with wide consultation on it set for this autumn (2019). It is set to be published early next year (2020).

D2N2’s Local Industrial Strategy will build on the research and priorities recently published in the LEP’s new Strategic Economic Plan, Vision 2030; bothtogetherdriving forward productivity and growth for the D2N2 LEP area economy, in the long term .
