Ear Foundation launches ‘Soundspace Online’

A Nottingham-based charity – specialising in helping hearing impaired children and adults through technology – has launched an online platform giving people more expert advice.

The Ear Foundation, based in Sherwin Road, Lenton, Nottingham, opened its additional facility there – the £700,000 ‘Sherman Centre’ – in April 2015. The building was part-funded with a £120,000 Unlocking Investment for Growth (or UI4G) grant from the D2N2 LEP, with a view to expanding its services and staff numbers.

As part of that growth of services, it has now created ‘SoundSpace Online’.

The website brings a wide range of practical resources and information on hearing loss together in one place. It is aimed at giving accessible information to people of all ages with hearing loss and their families, and to professionals working with them, and policy makers and funders of services in the sector.

Soundspace Online has just gone live, at http://www.soundspaceonline.com/

It covers:

  • The implications of hearing loss on development,
  • Types and causes of hearing loss,
  • How to identify hearing loss,
  • Hearing technologies and
  • Deaf community and culture, describing deafness, and sign languages.

Other sections of the Soundspace Online website are still in development but will eventually provide additional information on hearing loss from early childhood to adulthood, hearing technologies, and on scientific and medical advances.

Sue Archbold, Chief Executive of The Ear Foundation (pictured) said: “Hearing loss has a huge, often hidden impact on communication in today’s modern world. We have the technology to transform this, but all too often the latest information is hard to find.

“That’s where SoundSpace Online comes in, bringing together a wide range of resources, provided by people who understand its impact on the lives of deaf children, young people and adults and its management.”
