A hearing charity which received a substantial grant from the D2N2 Local Enterprise Partnership is extending its research activities, to further help deaf people.
In April (2015) The Ear Foundation charity opened the £700,000 ‘Sherman Centre’ (pictured below) at its headquarters in Lenton, Nottingham, to extend its facilities to help deaf children and adults with the latest hearing technologies. The project received £120,000 from D2N2’s Unlocking Investment for Growth (UI4G) programme.
It is expected that the new facility will eventually triple the number of people the charity can help (rising to 3,500 annually), double its amount of professional training, and create new staff jobs and safeguard others.
The Ear Foundation has now advertised for a Research Lead; with research experience relating to deaf children, young people and adults, their experiences and the impact on them of the latest hearing technologies, such as cochlear implants.
The £33,000 a year post is described by the charity as a “great opportunity to explore issues around deafness, with an emphasis on using a range of hearing technologies such as cochlear implants, both in the UK and abroad.”
Applicants for the Research Lead post must have a degree or equivalent qualification as a teacher of the deaf, speech and language therapist, audiologist or be a related health and education professional; and be familiar with current deaf service provision, developments and issues.
The Ear Foundation’s research has links with other national and international research organisations, including D2N2 partner organisation The University of Nottingham, adds the charity.
Last month (June) The Ear Foundation won the Medilink ‘Outstanding Achievement Award’ for its new Sherman Centre facility.
