Places are still available at a breakfast event for businesses who want to know more about the North Midlands Devolution Deal and the possibilities it could offer.
East Midlands Business Link are running a breakfast event from 8:00AM to 10:00AM tomorrow (May 4), with business development group Freeths Initiate and engineering consultancy Arup. It will be held at the Freeths Nottingham Office, at Cumberland Court, 80 Mount Street, in Nottingham City Centre (NG1 6HH). It will feature speakers from Arup, Freeths and the D2N2 Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP).
D2N2 is the LEP for Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire and works with businesses, local authorities, skills and training providers and community and voluntary organisations to grow its areas economy. It’s Chief Executive, David Ralph (pictured), will give an update at tomorrow’s event on what devolution – the transfer of power and funding from Government to local areas – could help the area achieve and the current progress towards a North Midlands Devolution deal.
David will be joined by John Kelly, Construction Senior Associate at Freeths – who will outline what devolution is and Neal Byers, Senior Planner at Arup – who will look at what has worked best in other regions, as well as potential construction and environmental issues that devolution could help with.
Some of the benefits which a North Midlands devolution deal could bring are:
- 55,000 new private sector jobs
- 77,000 extra homes
- An Investment Fund over 30 years to provide infrastructure such as roads and bridges
- Adult skills provision that better meets the needs of businesses
- A joint transport fund to spend on key transport improvements
- A better co-ordinated public transport system with ‘Oyster’ style smart ticketing
- More responsive and co-ordinated business support for growth
- The creation of substantially more apprenticeship opportunities
- More people entering employment through better targeted local programmes
- Journey times to London of less than 90 minutes by train.
