A charity tackling deafness – which received major funding from the D2N2 Local Enterprise Partnership – is expanding its services to run a series of advice sessions for adults with hearing disabilities.
The Ear Foundation opened its £700,000 ‘Sherman Centre’ at its headquarters in Lenton, Nottingham, in April (2015) (pictured left). The purpose built facility was part-funded with a £120,000 Unlocking Investment for Growth (or UI4G) grant from D2N2, with a view to expanding its services and staff numbers.
Following a successful event last month (November) the charity – which aids children and adults with hearing loss in finding the right technology to help them – will be running its ‘Sound Advice for Adults’ sessions in 2016.
The first events in the programme will be:
- Saturday January 16 – ‘Tinnitus and Balance’ – A study day to explore the causes and treatment of tinnitus and vertigo. The day will give attendees an opportunity to share their experiences.
- Saturday March 19 – ‘Loop Systems’ – A chance to find out more about loop systems, how they work and how they might improve people’s ability to listen.
- Saturday May 14 – ‘Personal Experiences’ – Intended to be an inspiring day of shared experiences of deafness, with a variety of speakers sharing their stories and an opportunity to meet other deaf adults.

The D2N2 UI4G programme has been supported by the Regional Growth Fund and the European Regional Development Fund. UI4G grant awards are given by the D2N2 Local Enterprise Partnership Investment Panel, chaired by Board Member Peter Gadsby. The aim of the fund is to create long term sustainable jobs.
UI4G is now fully committed and no longer accepting applications. Grants already approved will create over 400 new jobs and safeguard a further 350. The programme has inspired business owners in the D2N2 area to invest over £20million, alongside the grant support, to grow their businesses.
