Latest work on Nottingham Cycle Network due to get underway next week

The next phase of a smarter travel initiative including new cycle ‘highways’ – funded by £6.1million from the D2N2 Local Enterprise Partnership – is due to begin next week (August 30).

The area between University Boulevard and Broadgate roundabout in Lenton, Nottingham, will benefit as part of a new ‘Western Corridor’ cycle route – running from the corner of Derby and Woodside Road (A52), past the University of Nottingham and the Queens Medical Centre and along Castle Boulevard (A6005) (pictured) – joining improved city centre cycle connections. This latest instalment of the project is due to be completed by October of this year (2016).

Part of the wider Nottingham Cycle City Ambition Programme (NCCAP), the entire project is receiving £6.1m from D2N2’s Local Growth Fund allocation from Government. The project will create four cycle corridors, running east-west and north-south across the city, to improve access for current cyclists and encourage others to get on their bikes.

D2N2 is a partnership of local authorities, businesses, skills and training providers and community and voluntary organisations. It works to grow the economy and create jobs across its area of Derby, Derbyshire, Nottingham and Nottinghamshire.

Nottingham City Council Highway Services is building the new network, providing additional contracting jobs and apprenticeships. When complete, the NCCAP will have created 16.4km of new cycle route both on and off-road, 7.5km of additional off-road cycle paths, and 1.8km of on-road cycle lane alongside the River Leen and within Nottingham parks.

The project’s success will be measured by:

  • recorded increases in bike use
  • reductions in commuting by car
  • health benefits
  • reduction in traffic pollution
  • aiding the overall economic growth of Nottingham.

Peter Richardson, Chairman of the D2N2 Local Enterprise Partnership, said:  “The promotion of sustainable transport is one of D2N2’s key commitments, as can be seen by our major investment in this project.”

Councillor Nick McDonald, Portfolio Holder for Growth, Jobs and Transport at Nottingham City Council, added: “We are really pleased with the progress we have already made on our cycle superhighway works, which are due to complete soon. These works will ultimately provide a brand new cycle route linking the city centre to Woodside Road.”
