Multi-million pound revamp for intu Broadmarsh and Nottingham’s ‘Southern Gateway’ backed by D2N2

Detailed plans for a £150million transformation of Nottingham city-centre’s intu Broadmarsh centre and for the city’s ‘southern gateway’ have now been submitted.

A detailed planning application has just been lodged with Nottingham City Council planning officers for assessment; following several months of public consultation, extensive design work and a public exhibition of the proposals in the shopping centre itself.

The proposals detail site owner intu’s vision for a vibrant new southern gateway into Nottingham from the train station. The D2N2 Local Enterprise Partnership has given £10.4m from its Growth Fund to help pay for road and building alterations linked to the project, to create a more pedestrian-friendly welcome to the Nottingham’s city-centre.

D2N2 – a partnership of businesses, local authorities, and higher and further education providers which promotes economic growth in Nottingham, Nottinghamshire, Derby and Derbyshire – lists the ‘Broadmarsh and Southern Gateway’ project in its current Strategic Economic Plan as key to reinvigorating the southern entrance to Nottingham city-centre.

The application submitted to Nottingham City Council details a wide range of new facilities in and around intu Broadmarsh, including:

  • A new open street to complement Middle Pavement and extend Bridlesmith Gate
  • An improved new route through the centre from Lister Gate to Carrington Street
  • A new entrance on Middle Hill
  • A variety of places to eat
  • A multi-screen cinema.

Adam Tamsett, General Manager at intu Broadmarsh, said: “More than 2,500 people have expressed their views on the redevelopment proposals, via both our formal survey and through the exhibition hub. intu has listened to the people of Nottingham and we have used their requests and ideas to inform our plans. The submission of the planning application takes us one big step closer to making a ‘new’ intu Broadmarsh a reality and that is very exciting for everyone involved.”

D2N2 Chairman Peter Richardson said: “This is a long awaited major redevelopment for Nottingham city-centre and we welcome the submission of detailed plans. The D2N2 Local Enterprise Partnership has taken an active role, working with its partners, in promoting and helping finance the ambitious plans for the Broadmarsh and ‘southern gateway’ area.”
