Nottingham College launches Public Consultation

Members of the public are now being invited to have their say on a landmark development in Nottingham City Centre.

The Nottingham College City Hub (artists impression pictured), will be a £58million skills and training facility located in the heart of Nottingham City Centre. Plans have been in development for some time and have taken a definitive step forward as Nottingham College has now launched its formal consultation.

The D2N2 Local Enterprise Partnership – which works with higher and further education providers across Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire – is part-funding the creation of the Nottingham City Hub with up to £30million from its Local Growth Fund (LGF) allocation – subject to the college’s detailed business plan.

This development will link in with the wider £250million development of the area, dubbed ‘The Southern Gateway’. This will involve redeveloping the intu Broadmarsh Centre, the rebuild of the Broadmarsh bus station and car park and the remodelling of road and pedestrian routes in the area. This project is also being part-funded by the D2N2 LEP, who have allocated £10.3million LGF to improve Wilford Road (NG2 1EB) and Wilford Street (NG2 1AA), as part of the wider Southern Gateway redevelopment.

The Nottingham City Hub will provide high-quality college and community facilities, together with a new business hub. Nottingham College will also encourage new business start-ups, better collaboration between itself and employers and will provide the wider community with improved training and skills resources. In addition, the campus will house a new performing arts centre, student retail space, café and training restaurant and bar. The building will occupy six storeys in total and the design is being led by architects Bond Bryan.

The site will offer a new green space as a local community facility and the design of the public realm aspects of the site are being led by Nottingham City Council, in collaboration with local residents and the wider community.

The City Hub campus is a fundamental part of Nottingham College’s ambitions for the future. Nottingham College aims to be a new and very different college for Nottingham – established as a result of a successful merger between New College Nottingham and Central College Nottingham.

Setting out to change the face of Further Education, the College is working to ensure the qualifications it provides and the students it produces are fit for industry – with the ability to play a full and meaningful role in the growth of Nottingham’s economy.

David Ralph, D2N2 Chief Executive, said: “Nottingham has ambitious plans to increase economic growth and the prosperity of its communities. Nottingham College, a college of and for the city, will provide a real opportunity to develop the skills local people need. Working in partnership with schools, our universities and other skills providers it will deliver a step change in skills; and help raise productivity, leading to improved opportunities and quality of life for Nottingham’s citizens.”

John van de Laarschot, Nottingham College Chief Executive added:

It is our aspiration to bring to Nottingham something truly iconic, something that does not simply fit the mould of a traditional college campus, but which provides a unique space in which business and education co-exist and the relationship between the two can be strengthened.”

Public consultation is now underway and residents and businesses in the area are being invited to dedicated consultation sessions being held at Nottingham Contemporary on Friday 10th November 2017.

All members of the public who would like to share their views on the scheme are encouraged to do so via www.nottinghamcollege.ac.uk/cityhub where plans and images are available.

Or, it is possible to come along to the public sessions at Nottingham Contemporary on 10th November between either 10.30am – 12noon or 2pm – 5pm
