Overseas interest sparks sales boost for chemical firm

Sales treble thanks to exports -Export Week

A Kinoulton-based family chemical manufacturer are celebrating trebling their turnover after boosting overseas sales, with help from UK Trade & Investment (UKTI).

Scafell Organics, which are celebrating their ten year anniversary this year, have expanded turnover from £200,000 in 2010 to £750,000, by securing contracts across the EU and USA.

Help from UKTI allowed Scafell to develop an effective export driven marketing strategy .

The husband and wife team of David and Kath Bowen produce a range of fine organics and polymers for use in industries ranging from research to aerospace to pharmaceuticals, and have also diversified  into other services, such as distribution and the provision of an Emergency Chemical Response Unit.

Since establishing the company, based on a shared love of chemistry, staff have grown from two to ten, and exports now make up 60-70% of their business.

They expect that by 2018, exports will contribute to turnover approaching a million.

This Export Week the firm have confirmed that a US multi-national plan to continue to work with them, after they successfully completed a £150,000 contract.

Kath said:

“Exports have played a large role in building our business.  With help from UKTI our overseas sales have grown massively in the last three years and are now running at 60 to 70% of our business. The contract win in America provided a huge boost to our growth and was our first substantial contract in the US – worth £150,000.  We have now just received confirmation they will be bringing us new contracts in the new year.”

UKTI’s Export Week aims to encourage companies to take up the export challenge and highlight the wealth of support and knowledge available to help them grow.

Kath and David will be visiting UKTI’s flagship Export Week event, ExploreExport, this Thursday at The Radisson Blu at East Midlands Airport, to meet with some of the 60 representatives who are visiting, from countries including Brazil, Vietnam, Portugal and Poland.

David added:

“We are keen to keep expanding into new markets. The demand for what we do is huge so we are exploiting any opportunities available to do this.  ExploreExport is a fantastic opportunity for us, as a small firm, to meet specialist contacts from across the world in one place.”

Mandy Rait, International Trade adviser from UKTI said:

“This Export Week we are keen to ensure that companies follow the lead of Scafell Organics. They have embraced exporting and the support that UKTI can offer to maximise their success.”
