In 2022 D2N2 LEP, in partnership with Greater Lincolnshire and Leicester & Leicestershire LEPs, successfully bid to secure £3 million to support East Midlands businesses in the manufacturing sector via the Made Smarter programme over the period January 2023 to June 2025. Made Smarter aims to increase productivity through the adoption of digital technology.

The Made Smarter East Midlands programme aims to fuel growth and bolster productivity among East Midlands-based manufacturing small and medium sized businesses (SMEs). By participating in the programme, businesses are presented with a unique opportunity to delve deep into the intricacies of digital technology adoption and gain a broader understanding that is tailored and relevant to their operations. Made Smarter equips participants with essential skills and knowledge, ensuring they are well-prepared to navigate the complexities of the digital landscape.

Why Embrace Digitalisation?

In today’s fast-paced business landscape, embracing digitalisation isn’t just optional; it’s a necessity for survival and growth. The world is evolving, and so are consumer demands. Digital technologies offer unparalleled efficiency, precision and agility, enabling manufacturers to streamline their operations and processes, reduce costs and enhance product quality, thereby enhancing their the competitive edge.

One of the key aspects of the Made Smarter East Midlands Programme is its focus on providing valuable insights into the future of digital manufacturing. Participants are encouraged to think forward to 2040 and understand how this future world aligns with their own digital transformation goals. Made Smarter empowers businesses to evaluate their digital readiness, identifying strengths and weaknesses and adopting cutting edge practice to bridge the gaps effectively.

A graduate from the programme said: “Made Smarter has had such a dramatic impact on the business. I’m recruiting the next generation of engineers, I’ve got plans for £2m investment in new technology and a healthy order book. It’s phenomenal.”

Leading the Change

Leadership plays a pivotal role in the success of digital transformation, and Made Smarter East Midlands recognises this by emphasising the importance of strong and visionary leadership. Participants of the programme can undertake a Leading Digital Transformation Course in partnership with, and delivered by, Loughborough University.

During the course, participants learn how to leverage their leadership strengths to facilitate successful digital transformation within their organisations. Strategic alignment is another crucial element, emphasising how digital technologies can enable new business models that balance economic, environmental and societal considerations.

The course lasts 12 weeks, comprising eight sessions that blend half-day and full-day workshops. These sessions are designed to cover a diverse range of skills and knowledge necessary for the implementation of a successful ‘Digital Transformation Journey.’ The sessions are led by experts, including Professor Janet Godsell, Dr Kamran Chatha, Professor Vikki Locke, and Naomi Dake, who bring a wealth of knowledge and experience.

In essence, the Made Smarter East Midlands Adoption Programme serves as a catalyst for transformation, propelling manufacturing SMEs into a digitally advanced future. By arming businesses with knowledge, skills and strategic insights, the programme paves the way for a more innovative, efficient and competitive manufacturing sector in the East Midlands. Through this programme, businesses are not merely adapting to the digital age but are actively shaping it, ensuring a prosperous and sustainable future for the entire industry.
