UTC Open Day Raises Profile of Job Opportunities

Derby Manufacturing University Technical College are holding two events ahead of the application closing date for students who want be the first to join in September 2015.

Applications for the first year ten and 12 students at the UTC, currently being built in Pride Park, will close on January 28 2015.

Current year nine and year 11 students are therefore being invited to meet the UTC Principal Philip Morris on Monday December 8, 6pm to 8pm at Derby College’s Johnson building which overlooks the site of the new £8 million UTC centre.

This will be followed by an information session on Saturday January 10, which will be a chance to find out more about the work of the UTC.

Derby Manufacturing UTC is a partnership between Derby College, the University of Derby, Rolls-Royce Plc, Bombardier, Toyota Motor Manufacturing (UK) Ltd, Derby City Council and a wide range of supply chain employers working in local manufacturing and engineering.

The UTC will have capacity for up to 600 young people aged 14 to 19. They will study core GCSE’s, A levels and engineering qualifications enhanced by project based learning, work placements, employer site visits and industry expert lectures.

Among the young people who have already applied to the Derby Manufacturing UTC and is looking forward to starting her studies there next September is Meena Khetani, who will join year 10.

Meena (13) from Sinfin, who currently attends the City of Derby Academy, said: “I have always been more interested in practical skills and this gives me the chance to do GCSEs alongside engineering projects.”

And her dad Rashmi thinks the college will give the students opportunities they might not have had otherwise.

He said: “Engineering is a complex area but this will open so many more doors to the students and hopefully give them the edge when they are looking for jobs.”

Mr Morris concluded: “We are delighted with the response from young people and their families to the UTC and applications are coming in on a daily basis for September 2015.”
