YMCA Community and Activity Village to benefit from D2N2 investment

Work can now begin to turn a key site in Newark into a state-of-the-art community and activity village thanks to a multimillion-pound investment by D2N2.

D2N2 will contribute £2.2 million from its Local Growth Fund allocation towards the £12.5 million project overseen by the YMCA just off Lord Hawke Way in Newark, creating up to 137 jobs, supporting the education of up to 1200 learners and 38 Apprentices.

The Local Growth Fund enables D2N2 to invest in projects that benefit the local area and economy, supporting greater numbers of jobs, homes, and learners.

The village is the first of its kind, and once constructed, will provide a community space that offers opportunities to everyone, increasing social mobility and empowering young people and families in an area ranked as one of the worst areas in the country for social deprivation.

As a result of phase one of construction, the site already features facilities for multiple sports including all-weather football pitches, a multi-use games area, and an athletics track.

D2N2’s funding will go towards phase two of the project which includes a new state of the art community venue with a 300-seater conference and events space and five fully digital and connected suites for education, training, and flexible workspace.

Once the village is fully complete in December 2021, it will boast art spaces, education programmes, healthcare suites, 80-seater café, a nursery, a community training kitchen, a Bouldering centre complete with Olympic-sized wall and much more.

Work is due to begin on-site next month.

D2N2 Interim Chair David Williams said: “D2N2 is firmly committed to improving the life chances of our residents so I’m delighted we are able to contribute to this vital scheme.”

“As our communities recover from the economic toll of the Coronavirus pandemic, we need to ensure that we can all take part in the recovery and that no one is left behind.”

Executive Director of YMCA Newark and Sherwood Todd Cauthorn said: “With the support from D2N2, we are thrilled to progress with the next phase of the Village project.”

“By bringing together opportunities in sport, education, arts and health, we will be able to make a significant and positive impact on the lives of young people and families in Nottinghamshire.”

Minister for Regional Growth and Local Government, Luke Hall MP said: “Through the Local Growth Fund, this Government is investing in projects which are making a real difference in our communities by delivering long-lasting benefits in terms of jobs, skills and economic growth.

“This £2.2m investment in Newark means the local community will have access to a new state-of-the-art community space, creating new jobs, increasing social mobility and empowering young people and families in the area.”
