Two multi-million pound, hi-tech buildings part-funded by the D2N2 Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) are finalists in a prestigious property awards contest – and will even go head-to-head in one of the categories.
The two buildings are the BioCity Discovery Building (pictured), in Nottingham City Centre, and the University of Nottingham’s Institute for Advanced Manufacturing. They are both on the shortlist for Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) awards, in multiple categories.
Both of these buildings were made possible thanks to financial help provided by the D2N2 LEP. D2N2 is a partnership of businesses, local authorities, skills and training providers and community and voluntary organisations which works to grow its area’s economy. This is done in a number of ways, including the support of capital projects through D2N2’s £250million Local Growth Fund allocation.
The BioCity Discovery building was a £30million project – part-funded by £6.5million Local Growth Funding. This saw BioCity, a business incubation centre for new life science companies, gain an extension to its facilities. It is hoped that this will create around 700 jobs over a 30-year span, whilst safeguarding a further 250. Of the 50,000 sq. ft. of lab and office space available in the Discovery building, 30,000 is already occupied by expanding life sciences company Sygnature Discovery.
BioCity has been nominated in the Commercial, Design through Innovation and Regeneration categories at this year’s RICS awards.
The Institute for Advanced Manufacturing was a £23million project, located at the University of Nottingham’s Jubilee Campus. Of this, £18.1m came from the University of Nottingham and £5m from the D2N2 LEP’s Local Growth Fund. The institute provides an extra 9,000 square metres of teaching space, laboratories, workshops and research facilities. This will be available for up to 700 staff, students and researchers.
The Institute will also house the ‘Rolls-Royce University Technology Centre for Manufacturing Technology’. It will allow for engineers and scientists to collaborate towards developments for a range of sectors. These include aerospace, automotive, marine, energy generation, food and drink, chemical products and pharmaceuticals.
It is anticipated that the Institute will create dozens of jobs in its first five years. This is in addition to helping manufacturing businesses in the D2N2 LEP area. Expertise will be available to address businesses technical issues and aid in the creation of new products.
The Institute for Advanced Manufacturing has been nominated in the Infrastructure and Regeneration categories at this year’s RICS awards.
The winners of the RICS Awards 2018 in the East Midlands will be revealed this Thursday night (May 3). The awards ceremony is happening at the Nottingham Belfry, Mellors Way, Nottingham, NG8 6PY.
