Blog: Introducing the Careers Governor

In this blog, D2N2 Enterprise Coordinator LIAM JACKSON talks about Careers Governors, how they can benefit a school in delivering careers education, and why you should consider saving the pips from your orange.

As with anything in life, if something isn’t given the care and attention it needs, it is never going to reach its full potential.

Take an orange pip.

With the right nurturing, the orange pip can grow into a citrus tree that bears fruit capable of sustaining a whole community, making everyone’s lives just that bit sweeter.

It’s not hard to draw parallels between an orange pip and careers education, at least it isn’t if, like me, you’re involved in inspiring our future workforce.

Like the tree, if we don’t look after our careers education the fruit we produce might not be as enriching as it could be.

Thankfully, schools can increasingly call upon their very own careers botanists who can sit on a board of Governors at a school or Trustees for a Multi-Academy Trust, helping to nurture our careers education and allowing it to flourish.

Enter the Careers Governor.

The Careers Governor

The Careers Governor will champion careers education, ensuring a school is meeting its statutory obligations but also to ensure it is as effective and meaningful as possible.

From their place on a school’s board, a Careers Governor can see opportunities to tie careers into all the aspects of the school system to which it could contribute and compliment so much.

The Careers Governor can also help bridge the gap between Careers Leaders (who are sometimes under-resourced and juggling multiple roles) and the school’s leadership team, ensuring careers gets the attention it deserves.

Like a botanist though, a Careers Governor needs to be given the space to focus completely on their area of expertise, and that involves recognising the role modern careers education plays.

Careers education in schools should no longer be a bolt-on (or even forgotten about entirely, like our orange pips often are) and is now often referred to as a golden thread, weaved throughout the entire school’s system and curriculum.

To enable this to happen at any school there must be involvement at every level and that is where a Careers Governor is incredibly important.

Through the Enterprise Adviser Network (EAN), D2N2 is helping to bridge the gap between school and work for pupils, bringing local employers into schools to share their expertise and inspire the next generation.

This work enables schools to connect to local businesses better than ever before, ensuring their needs are considered, and enabling Careers Education to be made relevant to their local areas.

To lend further support to schools, D2N2 is promoting the role of a Careers governor across the area, highlighting the benefits of the role and providing schools with the resources to enable and maximise the role of a career’s governor.

If you’re interested in adding a Careers Governor to your school’s board or if you’d like to become one yourself feel free to get in touch, even if it’s just to talk about orange pips…
