Project details:
The Grade I-listed Buxton Crescent was built in the Georgian era, between 1779 and 1789, as part of the Fifth Duke of Devonshire’s attempts to enable Buxton to compete with Bath as a health spa for visitors.
The £68million redevelopment and restoration of the Crescent and its associated buildings will create an 80 bedroom five-star hotel and spa business. It is estimated this will create 350 jobs during construction and more than 140 permanent jobs on completion, as well as indirect jobs creation in sectors servicing the new leisure facility.
Funding for the project is via developer the Buxton Crescent & Thermal Spa Co Ltd providing just under £18m. Other funders include the Heritage Lottery Fund, D2N2, Historic England, High Peak Borough Council and Derbyshire County Council.
Work began on the project in February 2016 and is due to be completed in 2020.
